COMMUNITY SERVICE

The District 47 community service project for 2008-9 was to start a new library for book starved Johnston County.  The rapid population rate during the past 20 years was much higher than the support for and growth of the eight libraries in the county, which in 2008 had only 1.7 books per resident.  Cleveland Township, where I-40 intersects with N.C. HWY 42 at Exit 312, has 15,000 residents.  They get 30 minutes of county bookmobile service a month, when the budget allows and the bookmobile is running, or they must drive to neighboring Clayton or Garner libraries.

District 47 member, Ronald Still, is serving as director of the Cleveland Library http://4042needs.org/library/.  He has been working for the Department of Environment and U.S. EPA for 20 years as a Library Technical Assistant and is a member of N.C. Library Association.  District 47 donated $250.00 to Wake County Libraries, which was matched by private donations to provide nearly 4,000 books to help start the Cleveland Library.  By April 15, 2009, the library collection of 25,000 books and movies ranked 4th in size among the county's nine libraries and the Cleveland Township ratio of books to people doubled to 3.4.

If you would like to donate any books (new or used) to the library, please drop them off on any Saturday from 9-6 or Monday night from 6-9.  The library is located at 5533 NC HWY 42 W Units D96-100, Garner; telephone 919-661-6565. The library welcomes tax deductible financial donations, which can be mailed to Cleveland Library, 1413 Kenbrook Drive, Garner, NC 27529-4447.  Volunteers are needed Monday and Thursday evenings 6-9 and Saturdays 9-6.
